  The Saturday School
 Harris Academy - Welling
Saturday mornings - 9.30 to 11.30

Years 3, 4, and 5

Students study Maths, English and Reasoning. All of the work covered is to extend skills for their SAT’s and preparation for local selective tests. Each week all students spend time on independent study but each half tem a different focus will also be covered in English. The areas for focus are comprehension, grammar and punctuation, reportive writing, poetry, story writing, handwriting and spelling and vocabulary extension. We operate a fortnightly timetable alternating independent study time between English and Verbal Reasoning. This is always for the first hour of each session. The second hour is for Maths and Non Verbal Reasoning. Once again the subjects are alternated weekly for the first 15 minutes of the session with one week being Mental Arithmetic and the other being Non Verbal Reasoning. The session is then given over to independent study time for Maths followed by Math's games. The games times focus on number, time, fraction, money and investidation games. Homework is set related to the work that the student has been completing in class. Reading homework is set every week from prescribed reading material. Spelling is set for those children who need to extend their skills in this area.

All students are ability grouped and therefore are required to have an assessment. This determines each child’s levels and ensures they are grouped correctly. All students are catered for with an individualised programme of study in relation to our findings. There is a maximum of 6 students per group.

See 'The Group Information Pack' for fees and for booking an assessment.

Year 6 students have to commit to a 27 week SAT's preparation course which finishes at the end of May/. They follow a diferent programme of study for their independent study times. The reasoning component is dropped and English sessions are now given over to SAT's prep with the aim of bringing all skills up to a strong level 5 across the board. Once level 5 has been attained then they work on achieving level 6. In English they study grammar, punctuation, comprehension, recognising and using inference, writing techniques, spelling and vocabulary extension. In maths they continue to study number skills, computation of number, fraction and decimals, problem solving, investiations, mental arithmetisc and topics as identified in their assessment materials. Students also practise past SAT's papers to prepare for these tests.

All students are ability grouped and therefore are required to have an assessment. This determines each child’s levels and ensures they are grouped correctly.
